What is Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa Yoga is a style of yoga where a practitioner flows from one pose to the next in a fluid motion, which is unlike traditional yoga where a practitioner usually pauses in between poses or holds poses for extended periods of time. The word Vinyasa can be interpreted as “breath-synchronised movement.”
Breathing technique is very important in the Vinyasa style of yoga. With each movement, a Vinyasa yoga instructor will tell a student whether to inhale or exhale, while also describing the elements of the pose she would like him/her to be in. A Vinyasa Yoga class therefore refers to a session that focuses on breathing techniques and smoothly flowing transitions and poses. Instructors and students believe the constant motion and intense muscle usage of Vinyasa helps to release toxins from the body and improves flexibility.
Vinyasa Yoga has become popular with fitness enthusiasts who often consider classical yoga too slow, boring, or not a real workout. The constant flow from one pose to the next of Vinyasa Yoga is a better fit for gym goers who are used to the constant motion and intense activity of aerobic classes like kickboxing and zumba. Many fitness gyms have been adding Vinyasa Yoga classes to their fitness schedules to further test the endurance of their members.
Prenatal Yoga
Are you pregnant and want to keep fit? Then yoga could be what you are looking for. Yoga can help women get through their pregnancy with minimal discomfort. It also helps the birth and post-delivery stages. Pregnant women who do yoga exercises appear healthier, both in mind and body. Their bodies are more flexible, which enables them to adapt to various positions when in labour and the ligaments are more elastic, which in turn can help reduce labour pain. Yoga classes help to boost circulation and also help with fluid retention. Yoga also helps prepare for the birth – it encourages breath and body awareness, reduces worry and teaches women to adapt to new situations. Yoga continues to have benefits after pregnancy too. Postnatal yoga strengthens the abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor. It also helps you to get back to your pre-pregnancy shape faster.
Iyengar Yoga
Iyengar Yoga, created by B. K. S. Iyengar, is a form of Hatha Yoga known for its use of props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets, as aids in performing asanas (postures). The props enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimising the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both young and old. The development of strength, mobility, and stability are emphasized through the asanas Iyengar Yoga is firmly on the traditional eight limbs of yoga as expounded by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras, which includes yama , niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi. A form of Hatha Yoga, it focuses on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being. This discipline is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well-being.
Standing poses are emphasised in Iyengar Yoga. They are said to build strong legs, increase general vitality, and improve circulation, coordination and balance, ensuring a strong foundation for study of more advanced poses.
Unlike more experiential approaches where students are encouraged to independently "find their way" to the asanas by imitating the teacher, an Iyengar Yoga class is highly verbal and precise, with misalignments and errors actively corrected. Iyengar teachers complete at least two years of rigorous training for the introductory certificate. They may complete subsequent intermediate levels and senior levels of certification, potentially entailing a decade or more of training.
Our Practitioners
Alison Slater
After receiving a Bachelor of Science in 2000, I went on to obtain a Diploma of Massage Therapy in 2003. I owned my own massage therapy practice in Canada for 7 years and also pursued a side business in teaching yoga, which is one of my biggest passions. I have been practicing yoga for over 15 years now and have been teaching for over 3 years. I believe that people should take a proactive approach to their healthcare rather than reactive, focusing on body, mind and soul. It is my pleasure each day to help and teach people to live healthier, happier lives.
